Dear USA Gymnastics Community,
Last week, due to the growing concern over the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and with our commitment to our community’s health and wellness in mind, we made the decision to cancel events and sanctions for events and meets for the remainder of March. This morning, after reviewing the latest CDC guidance, we are taking the following additional measures:
Events. We have decided to extend the event and meet sanction moratorium for eight weeks, through at least May 10. This restriction means that all sanctioned meets and events, including state and regional championships that were to occur during that time, will be canceled. Additionally, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Men’s Artistic JO Nationals and the 2020 Women’s Artistic JO Nationals. We will continue our plans to hold events in late May and beyond, including U.S. Championships, USA Gymnastics Championships, National and Regional Congresses, and the 2020 Olympic Trials, unless otherwise noted.
For clarity, we have listed the tentative plan for each event here. We will continue to update this list with any new guidance on a weekly basis, and will do our best to provide as much notice as possible before additional cancellations. Ideally, we would like to provide notice of a decision a month ahead of an event, but will also need to remain flexible to respond as things evolve.
Club Operations. We know that many club owners and operators are considering how best to handle this unprecedented situation. While we cannot mandate clubs’ decisions, we strongly urge all members to review the latest CDC guidance, to be extremely careful about any use of your facilities and, when in doubt, to err on the side of caution and care by severely limiting any practices or activities.
We do not take lightly that the cancellation of so many events has a significant impact on everyone involved, particularly those athletes who will miss the chance to mark an athletic career milestone. Nonetheless, we know that this is the right decision, that we must do our part to help keep our communities safe and healthy through this challenging time.
Finally, we will continue to monitor this fluid situation and include all of our updates on this dedicated page.
We thank you all for your continued commitment to each other’s safety and health, and to working through this together.
Sincerely,
Li Li Leung,
President & CEO, USA Gymnastics
